Over the past 30 years, coal has been one of Australia’s major export industries. In fact, for most of that period it was the major export industry. Coal represents the main export earner for both Queensland and NSW. Coal, however, is not just an export industry.
What is particularly important is the relationship between coal and electricity generation. The modern Australian economy is highly dependent on access to reliable and cheap electricity. Coal mining and the coal economy underpin our prosperity.
