On September 28, 2020 Russian Railways (RZD) launched a new bridge over the Kola River, connecting Murmansk with other regions of Russia. On June 01, Russian Northern port of Murmansk, located on the coast of the Kola Bay, was cut off from the railway network as a result of the railway bridge collapse (see CAA Russian Coal Weekly dated June 05, 2020). In January-September 2020 coal exports through the port of Murmansk, owned by SUEK, fell to 8.50 mio t (-2.2 mio t or -20.6% compared to January-September 2019) amid redirection of some tonnages from Murmansk to other terminals.
Nevertheless, under the statement of RZD’s representatives, a railway bridge collapse did not hinder the implementation of a large-scale project to create the Murmansk Transport Hub (MTH) and the further promotion of Murmansk as a territory of advanced development continues.
According to Russian government’s plans, the volume of transshipment through Murmansk commercial port should grow from the current 24 mio t per year to 100 mio t by 2030. The project for creating MTH involves the construction of a two-track railway line.
