Under the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, in January-May 2023 coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 91.8 mio t of coal (-1.3 mio t or -1.4% y-o-y).
The production of coking coal during this period increased to 28.2 mio t (+1.1 mio t or +4.1% y-o-y), whereas thermal coal extraction volumes amounted to 63.6 mio t (-2.4 mio t or -3.6% y-o-y).
Coal companies produced 61.5 mio t (+0.7 mio t or +1.2% y-o-y) at open-pit mines and 30.3 mio t (-2.0 mio t or -6.2% y-o-y) through underground mining. In Jan-May 2023, 74.8 mio t (+0.5 mio t or +0.7% y-o-y) were delivered to end-users, including 50.3 mio t (+1.0 mio t or +2.0% y-o-y) for export, 13.5 mio t (+0.1 mio t or +0.7% y-o-y) to Russian metallurgical companies and 7.3 mio t (+0.3 mio t or +4.3% y-o-y) to local coal-fired power plants.
As of June 01, 2023, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 21.1 mio t (+2.1 mio t or +11.0% vs. June 01, 2022) amid international sanctions against Russia and logistical issues (see the chart below).
