Under the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, in January-February 2023 coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 35.2 mio t of coal (-2.8 mio t or -7.4% y-o-y).
The production of coking coal during this period increased to 11.3 mio t (+0.7 mio t or +6.6% y-o-y), whereas thermal coal extraction volumes amounted to 23.9 mio t (-3.5 mio t or -12.8% y-o-y).
Coal companies produced 22.8 mio t (-2.3 mio t or -9.2% y-o-y) at open-pit mines and 12.4 mio t (-0.5 mio t or -3.9% y-o-y) through underground mining.
In Jan-Feb 2023, 30.1 mio t (-0.1 mio t or -0.3% y-o-y) were delivered to end-users, including 20.1 mio t (+0.6 mio t or +3.1% y-o-y) for export, 4.9 mio t (-0.3 mio t or -5.8% y-o-y) to Russian metallurgical companies and 3.1 mio t (flat y-o-y) to local coal-fired power plants.
As of March 01, 2023, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 20.7 mio t (+3.5 mio t or +20.3% to March 01, 2022).
Inventory growth in Kuzbass continued in 2023 amid international sanctions against Russia and logistical issues (see the chart below).
