The companies suspended operations because of the severe situation on the coal market due to sanctions, falling prices and the inability to deliver the required volumes through the Eastern range to the Asia-Pacific.

As a result of the ongoing crisis, companies are forced to reduce production volumes and investments, and in some cases even suspend production. High railroad tariffs and the increased interest rate also proved to be a serious challenge for the coal industry.

The total wage debt in the coal industry in Kuzbass reached 4 mio USD owed to 852 employees.

In January-February 2025, local companies produced 33.4 mio t (-0.7 mio t or -2.2% y-o-y). In 2024, coal output in Kuzbass dropped to 198.4 mio t (-15.8 mio t or -7.3% y-o-y).
