Kolmar coal production halted until October 2025

KOLMAR-ACCIDENT

On July 21, 2025, a fatal accident occurred on an industrial road at the Denisovsky mining complex (Yakutia), owned by Russian coal company Kolmar. A crew transport bus, carrying workers from the Vostochnaya Denisovskaya mine, fell from a height of 30 meters, killing 13 people and injuring 19 others. Ten of the injured were hospitalized.

Following the incident, Russia’s industrial safety authority Rostechnadzor ordered a temporary suspension of coal production and shipments at the Denisovsky complex, pending an internal investigation. The initial suspension period is expected to last up to 90 days, through mid-October 2025.

Preliminary estimates suggest the downtime at Kolmar’s operations could result in export supply shortfall of 1.0–1.2 mio t of coal in Q3 2025.

Kolmar is one of Russia’s key exporters of coking coal to the Asia-Pacific. Reduced availability from Kolmar may support prices, especially given ongoing supply disruptions from Russia amid the broader crisis in the country’s coal sector.

Kolmar Group includes the Denisovsky and Inaglinsky mining complexes in Yakutia, along with the VaninoTransUgol terminal in the Russian Far East.

In H1 2025, the company’s coal output dropped to 5.5 mio t (-1.8 mio t or -24.7% vs. H1 2024).
