On May 7, 2025, an explosion and a large fire at a coal storage facility occurred at the washing plant of Yakutugol (part of Mechel Group) in Neryungri (Yakutia).
As a result of the incident, four employees were injured and hospitalized with severe burns in a local hospital.
According to preliminary data, the cause could have been a methane fire at the warehouse of ready production. The Yakutia Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case for violations of industrial safety requirements.
Rostechnadzor is conducting an inspection, which may take from several weeks to months, depending on the extent of the damage and the violations identified. This may lead to a temporary reduction in coal preparation and export volumes.
The Neryungrinskaya washing plant, with a capacity of 4.2 mio t of coal per year (actual processing in 2024 was 3.9 mio t), has completely ceased operations.
The washing plant’s export share is 44% (1.7 mio t in 2024). The main supply directions are China, South Korea and Japan.
Depending on the downtime of the plant, the shortfall in coal supplies for export may range from 0.5 to 1.0 mio t (1-3 months).
The exact timing of the resumption of operations will be disclosed after the completion of inspections, which, according to preliminary estimates, may last until May 20, 2025.
