Coal-fired power as a security backstop in Europe’s grid

India’s coal and coke imports staged a sharp recovery in March 2025, rising to a nine-month high of 22.78 million metric tons (MMT). Despite a 5% YoY decline from 24.01 MMT in March 2024, imports rebounded 17% month-on-month (MoM) from February’s subdued level of 19.52 MMT.
