Reaching Zero Carbon Emissions from Steel

Today, about 95% of primary steel is produced in blast furnaces (BF-BOF) which use coking coal as both the reduction agent and the source of heat energy. Only around 5% new steel is produced via direct reduction (DRI) combined with electric arc furnaces (EAF). Source: The Energy Transitions Commission (ETC)
