The decline in Kuzbass coal production in 2023 to 214.2 (-9.4 million tons or -4.2% to 2022) continued in January 2024.
Under the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, in January 2024 coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 17.1 mio t of coal (-0.4 mio t or -2.3% y-o-y).
The production of coking coal during this period totaled 5.7 mio t (+0.1 mio t or +1.8% y-o-y), whereas thermal coal extraction volumes went down to 11.4 mio t (-0.5 mio t or -4.2% y-o-y).
Coal companies produced 11.4 mio t (+0.4 mio t or +3.6% y-o-y) at open-pit mines and 5.7 mio t (-0.8 mio t or -12.3% y-o-y) through underground mining.
In January 2024, exports plunged to 8.7 mio t (-1.6 mio t or -15.5% y-o-y)
As of February 01, 2024, coal stocks in Kuzbass slightly decreased to 21.0 mio t (-0.1 mio t or -0.5% vs. February 01, 2023) amid falling global prices and logistical issues.
