Under the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, in January-February 2024 coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 34.5 mio t of coal (-0.7 mio t or -2.0% y-o-y).
The production of coking coal during this period increased to 11.9 mio t (+0.6 mio t or +5.3% y-o-y), whereas thermal coal extraction volumes amounted to 22.6 mio t (-1.3 mio t or -5.4% y-o-y).
Coal companies produced 22.8 mio t (flat y-o-y) at open-pit mines and 11.7 mio t (-0.7 mio t or -5.6% y-o-y) through underground mining.
As of March 01, 2024, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 21.8 mio t (+0.9 mio t or +4.3% vs. March 01, 2023).
Sanctions and the emerging trend of halting operations at Russian coal mines and open-pit mines, along with increasing railroad tariffs by RZD, introduction of export duty, as well as removal of priority for coal shipments in railroad transportation amid limited capacity of the Eastern range, may have a negative impact on the volumes of production and supplies of Russian coal to the world market in 2024.
