India coal imports declined slightly in 2025 after the previous year’s peak, reflecting improved domestic production and softer thermal coal demand. Coking coal imports continued to rise, highlighting persistent reliance on overseas supplies to support steel sector growth.
India’s coal and coke imports totalled 264.6 million tonnes in 2025, down marginally year-on-year as stronger domestic output reduced the need for thermal coal imports. Thermal coal remained the largest component of imports despite a decline, while coking coal purchases increased in response to steady steel production demand.
Indonesia retained its position as the leading supplier, with imports from Russia and the United States also expanding, underscoring diversified sourcing strategies. Overall trends point to structurally strong demand tempered by price dynamics and improved local availability.
