(CAA Analytics) In January-June 2020 Ukraine coal imports dropped to 8.6 mio t (-18.5% y-o-y) with Russia accounting for 60% and the US for 30% of overall coal imports.
The decline stemmed from abundant material reserves at local coal-fired plants, built up as a result of warm winter in Ukraine as well as Covid-19 pandemic, dampening electricity demand. Coal reserves surplus in Ukraine rose to 2.5 mio t (+70% y-o-y). In response to lowering power demand Ukraine’s top coal producer DTEK Energy suspended business activity at its 15 mines. In 2019 total coal exports to Ukraine amounted to 21.1 mio t (-1.4% y-o-y).
On May 05, 2020, Ukraine introduced 65% duty on coal imports from Russia. The duty was not imposed on imports of anthracite and coking coal, the two types of coal that Ukraine facing shortage.
