Australian thermal and metallurgical coal outlook

Higher production is expected to lift Australia’s metallurgical exports from 163 million tonnes in 2021–22 to 172 million tonnes by 2027–28. Australia’s thermal coal export earnings have begun to decline, with global trade now past its peak. The price of 6,000 kcal Newcastle coal is expected to decline from US$371 a tonne in 2022 to around $US90 by 2028. See pages 50-74
