South African coal exports to the European Union surged by +677.0% y-o-y in Jan-Dec 2022 to 15.8 mln tonnes, from just 2.0 mln t in 2021. Over the last few years there have been significant reshuffles in terms of trade patterns, resulting from European sanctions on Russian coal.
