Sibanthracite Group is going to buy Vera Port Coal Terminal in the Russian Far East. Sibanthracite has no port of its own and no direct access to the Asia-Pacific market, and the company supplies its coal through North-Western and Southern ports of Russia.
This route makes transportation costs larger in comparison with the delivery via Far Eastern ports as major coal markets for Russian suppliers are located in Asia-Pacific region and freight rates from the Far Eastern ports are much lower than those from the ports in the European part of Russia.
Sibanthracite is one of the largest coal suppliers of Russian coal to the global market. Last year, total coal exports amounted to 22.5 mio t, which is more than 10% of total Russian coal exports. The company’s coal open-pit mines are located in the Novosibirsk Region and Kuzbass.
Vera Port Coal Terminal is one of the largest ports in the Far East. In 2023, the terminal totaled 7.5 mio t of coal, nearly 7% of Russian coal transshipment in Far Eastern ports.
Vera Port Coal Terminal is currently managed by Elgaugol, which is building its own coal terminal on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Vera Port Coal Terminal transships coal from Ogodzha and Elga (Elgaugol).
