Russian Ministry of Energy left mostly unchanged its forecast released in July on the drop of coal production in Russia to 395 mio t (-43.8 mio t or -10% compared to 2019) in 2020. In January-August 2020 Russian coal production lowered down to 259.15 mio t (-26.14 mio t or -9.2% y-o-y).
Under the recent statement of the deputy Minister of Energy Anatoly Yanovsky, coal exports may shrink by 5% in 2020. Over the course of January-August 2020 coal exports dropped to 147.7 mio t (-11.01 mio t or –7.5% y-o-y).
The reasons for the downward trend in the industry are the decline in world prices for steam and metallurgical coal amid negative consequences of Covid-19 pandemic.
