In January-September 2020 coal mining companies of Kuzbass (the Kemerovo region) reduced coal production to 163.2 mio t (-20.3 mio t or -11.1% compared to January-September 2019).
Volumes of extracted coking coal decreased to 55.6 mio t (-0.8 mio t or -1.4% compared to January-September 2019), thermal coal – to 107.6 mio t (-19.58 mio t or -15.4%).
In September 2020, 18.3 mio t of coal were shipped by rail (-0.6 mio t or -3.2% compared to August 2020). 9.1 mio t were shipped in the Western direction (-0.2 mio t or -2% compared to August 2020), 4.6 mio t in the Eastern direction (-0.3 mio t or -6% compared to August 2020). The rest part of the volumes 4.6 mio t was delivered to the domestic market.
In September 2020, 16.3 mio t of coal were shipped to consumers, including 11.2 mio t for exports, 2.7 mio t to metallurgical enterprises in Russia and 1.5 mio t to power plants.
Overall coal stocks in the Kemerovo region dropped to 18.9 mio t (-4.7 mio t or -20% to January 01, 2020).
Amid Covid-19 crisis, weighing mostly on thermal coal prices, some coal suppliers cut production of thermal coal and ramp up extraction of more expensive metallurgical material.
Siberia’s Kuznetsk coal basin, known as Kuzbass, is one of the largest deposits of high-quality material in the world.
