The World Steel Association’s October 2025 Short Range Outlook projects global steel demand to stabilise at 1.75 billion tonnes in 2025, with a 1.3% rebound expected in 2026.

Declines in China’s steel demand are slowing, while India, Vietnam, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia are leading growth in developing markets.

Steel consumption is forecast to rise 9% in India over 2025–26, underscoring continued expansion across infrastructure and manufacturing sectors.

The report signals ongoing strength in steel production and blast-furnace demand, sustaining coal use in key producer regions.

While China’s demand is softening, India’s steel boom — reliant on imported metallurgical coal — remains a key driver for seaborne coal trade.

The gradual recovery in Europe and the U.S. could also stabilise metallurgical coal flows into 2026.
