The China’s Jilin province border crossing point authority has announced that it is ready to switch to 24-hour work mode. Makhalino has been processing railcars round-the-clock since late March. Previously, the point functioned from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Synchronization of the two countries’ border crossing operations will result in increased throughput capacity at Makhalino-Hunchun. The main cargo going through the border crossing is Russian coal exported to China.

In 2021, Russian coal exports via Mahalino-Hunchun increased to 2.62 mio t (+0.04 mio t, or +1.6% y-o-y).

In January-July 2022, coal shipments to China through Mahalino-Hunchun amounted to 1.85 mio t (+0.09 mio t or +5.1% y-o-y).

Meanwhile, total overland Russian coal exports via Russian-Chinese border crossings in January-July 2022 decreased to 4.1 mio t (-0.4 mio t, or -8.9% y-o-y).
