In January-August 2020 Ukraine’s coal imports decreased to 11.53 mio t (-11.2% y-o-y). Covid-19 lockdowns throughout the country led to drop in energy demand amid abundant coal reserves unused due to warm winter. Russia remains the key coal exporter to Ukraine with the US, Kazakhstan, Colombia and South Africa providing lesser volumes. In January-August 2020 Ukraine received 59.4% of its coal imports from Russia, 31.2% from the US, 6.4% from Kazakhstan and other countries supplied the remaining 4%. In August, Ukraine’s coal reserves surged to 2.97 mio t (+8.8% compared to July 2020). In 2019, Ukraine imported 21.08 mio t of coal, including anthracite (-1.4% y-o-y).
On May 05, 2020, Ukraine introduced 65% duty on coal imports from Russia. The duty was not imposed on imports of anthracite and coking coal, the two types of coal that Ukraine facing shortage.
