Conditions favor swing to gas-fired power

U.S. coal and gas prices

Gas generation in key fuel switching regions has increased in recent days, partially in response to the downward adjustment in prices over the holidays.

As pictured in the chart, coal usage in PJM, MISO and SPP was notably stable over the month of the December and held their market share relative to gas.

However, the latest price response coupled with lower renewable generation forecasts over the next couple of weeks could work in favor of gas-fired power demand early this month.
