Global thermal coal spot prices have spiked, as increasing Chinese demand coincides with weather disruptions, supply impacts from COVID-19 outages, and the fallout from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Newcastle benchmark price is forecast to ease from a peak of US$184 a tonne in 2022 to around US$60 a tonne by 2027..
