Under the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, in January-April 2024 coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 70.4 mio t of coal (-2.6 mio t or -3.6% y-o-y).
The production of coking coal during this period totaled 23.1 mio t (+0.6 mio t or +2.7% y-o-y), whereas thermal coal extraction volumes plunged to 47.3 mio t (-3.2 mio t or -6.3% y-o-y).
Coal companies produced 45.6 mio t (-3.0 mio t or -6.2% y-o-y) at open-pit mines and 24.8 mio t (+0.4 mio t or +1.6% y-o-y) through underground mining.
As of May 01, 2024, coal stocks in Kuzbass climbed to 20.8 mio t (+0.2 mio t or +1.0% vs. May 01, 2023).
Sanctions and the emerging trend of halting operations at Russian underground and open-pit mines, along with high rail tariffs by RZD, as well as removal of priority for coal shipments in railroad transportation amid limited capacity of the Eastern range, may have a negative impact on the volumes of production and supplies of Russian high-quality coal to the world market in 2024.
In 2023, coal production in Kuzbass dropped to 214.2 mio t (-9.4 mio t or -4.2% vs. 2022).
