Under the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, in January-December 2022 coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 223.6 mio t of coal (-19.5 mio t or -8.0% y-o-y).
The production of coking coal during this period decreased to 65.6 mio t (-6.1 mio t or -8.5% y-o-y), whereas thermal coal extraction volumes amounted to 158.0 mio t (-13.4 mio t or -7.8% y-o-y).
Coal companies produced 151.7 mio t (-6.4 mio t or -4.0% y-o-y) at open-pit mines and 71.9 mio t (-13.1 mio t or –15.4% y-o-y) through underground mining.
In January-December 2022, 180.9 mio t (-18.6 mio t or -9.3% y-o-y) were delivered to end-users, including 120.2 mio t (-19.5 mio t or -14.0% y-o-y) for export, 31.8 mio t (-3.0 mio t or -8.6% y-o-y) to Russian metallurgical companies and 17.9 mio t (+2.5 mio t or +16.2% y-o-y) to local coal-fired power plants.
As of January 01, 2023, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 22.7 mio t (+5.4 mio t or +31.2% to January 01, 2022). Inventory growth in Kuzbass vs. 2021 continues for the eleventh month in a row amid logistical issues and international sanctions against Russia (see the chart below).
