Over the past week, European thermal coal indices kept rising above 109 USD/t, supported by above-normal temperatures and a significant reduction in stocks at ARA terminals.

Furthermore, EDF company warned that high temperatures and falling water levels in the Rhone River (France) would lead to a decline in nuclear power generation. Nevertheless, by the close of trading on Friday (July 4), the quotes had lost their gains, reverting to last week’s level of 104-105 USD/t.

Gas prices on the TTF hub moved downward to 404.81 USD/1,000 m3 (-18.92 USD/1,000 m3 w-o-w) amid stable supplies from Norway and record LNG purchases in June. Currently, European underground gas storage (UGS) is currently at almost 47% of the full capacity. As of July 2, 2025, coal stocks at ARA terminals reached a three-year low of 2.87 mio t (-0.30 mio t w-o-w).

South African High-CV 6,000 exceeded 99 USD/t, following the upward trend of the European market. However, similarly, at Friday’s close, it dropped back to last week’s level of 94-95 USD/t. Prices were supported by the derailment of railcars on June 30, that resulted in the closure of both railway lines, leading to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT). Due to the incident, suppliers may fail to replenish inventories at the terminal before the start of railway maintenance, which will take place from July 15 to July 26.

Stockpiles at the RBCT terminal are also low, at 3.59 mio t, causing concern among market participants, as 5 mio t is the typical volume level ahead of maintenance.

Rates for coal transportation by trucks rose in June, resulting from 300-400 vehicles being taken off the road because of unfavorable conditions on the coal market. Transportation from the Witbank deposit to RBCT jumped from 26.53 USD/t to 27.92-30.72 USD/t.

Transportation rates are expected to remain increasing, given strengthening coal prices.

In China, spot prices for 5,500 NAR coal at the port of Qinhuangdao firmed slightly to 86 USD/t on declining port inventories. Shenhua has recently raised its purchase prices, hence suppliers remain optimistic.

However, at current prices, coal companies are still incurring losses of 2.8-4.2 USD/t. Suppliers expect power companies to actively replenish stocks ahead of the peak consumption period at the end of July.

Inventories at the 9 largest ports decreased to 27.60 mio t (-0.97 mio t w-o-w), while coal stocks at the 6 largest coastal TPPs totaled 14.33 mio t (+0.43 mio t). The consumption climbed to 845 kt/day from 804 kt/day a week earlier.

Indonesian 5,900 GAR slipped to 71.5 USD/t, while the price of 4,200 GAR went up marginally to 39.5 USD/t.

Indonesian quotations moved in different directions, despite limited demand from India and unfavorable weather conditions. In view of low demand, the Indonesian authorities lowered the HBA price index for Medium- and Low-CV coal for the first half of July, while raising the index for High-CV material.

Some suppliers declared force majeure on shipments, following the collapse of a bridge in the Lahat area of Sumatra on June 29. As a result of the incident, coal transportation by road across the Muara Lawai Bridge was suspended. This may lead to delays in shipments to such countries as China, Vietnam, Thailand, and South Korea.

Australian High-CV 6,000 adjusted below 110 USD/t after rising a week earlier. The Australian authorities released a forecast predicting a decline in energy coal exports and export revenues. They revised their export forecast downward for fiscal 2025 to 207 mio t (-7 mio t), as well as to 204 mio t for 2026 (-3 mio t) and to 200 mio t for 2027 (-2 mio t).

Meanwhile, the benchmark for High-CV coal supplies to Japan is forecasted at 119 USD/t FOB Newcastle in 2026 and 120 USD/t FOB in 2027. The average price for 6,322 kcal/kg GAR coal is expected at 107 USD/t FOB in 2025 and 109-111 USD/t in 2026-2027.

The Australian metallurgical coal index HCC spiked by almost 10 USD/t to 182 USD/t, driven by limited supply on the spot market from Australia. Quotations were also supported by rising domestic prices for coking coal in China, attributed to reduced production and inventories.

The Australian authorities also lowered their forecast for metallurgical coal exports in fiscal 2025 to 147 mio t (-8 mio t) in 2026 to 160 mio t (-3 mio t) and in 2027 to 169 mio t (-4 mio t).

The downward revision of the forecast for 2025 is linked to adverse weather conditions, which have negatively affected production in Queensland and shipments from ports. Demand from foreign buyers is expected to remain strong until the end of 2025 owing to growth in manufacturing activity in India, including construction and automotive industries.
