Colombia has been a major coal exporter globally with total quantity reaching 103mmt in 2017, predominantly thermal, placing the country in 4th place behind Australia, Indonesia and South Africa.
However, over the past 4 years, there has been a dramatic drop in coal exports due to a sharp drop in coal prices, combined with strikes and a dispute between Glencore, one of the three major miners.
The monthly totals to date in 2021 indicate that annualised exports will be below 60mmt, which is less than 58% of the country’s peak exports.
However, our real-time data show a recent uptick in exports with strong weekly shipments of close to 1.4mmt, with an increase seen in the Puerto Bolivar / Cerrejón volumes.
