Russian Railways (RZD) is planning to open a new railway border crossing between Russia and China. Construction of Nizhneleninskoye-Tunjiang border crossing has been completed and the facility will be put into operation this summer.
RZD also informed that Makhalino-Hunchun railway crossing on the Russian-Chinese border will start operating 24 hours a day starting from July.
In early May, head of RZD Oleg Belozerov said that the number of border crossings between the two countries should be increased.
Also, Kyzyl (Tuva) – Kuragino (Krasnoyarsk region) railroad project is planned to be reoriented to China and Mongolia. Previously, it was supposed to provide an exit of the railroad from Tuva to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Tuva still has no railway connection to the rest of Russia. The railway line Elegest-Kyzyl-Kuragino, more than 400 km long, was to connect this region with the Krasnoyarsk region, as well as to ensure coal transportation from Elegest deposit with reserves of 776 mio t of coking coal. It was planned that the volume of freight traffic on the new line would amount to 15 mio t/year.
In January-May 2022, Russian overland coal exports to China via border crossings totaled 2.9 mio t (-0.45 mio t or -13.3% y-o-y).
