Coal production in Kuzbass down 1.7% in Jan-Oct 2023

Under the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass, in January-October 2023 coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 178.4 mio t of coal (-3.1 mio t or -1.7% y-o-y).

The production of coking coal during this period increased to 56.3 mio t (+1.9 mio t or +3.5% y-o-y), whereas thermal coal extraction volumes amounted to 122.1 mio t (-5.0 mio t or -3.9% y-o-y).

Coal companies produced 119.4 mio t (-2.7 mio t or -2.2% y-o-y) at open-pit mines and 59.0 mio t (-0.4 mio t or -0.7% y-o-y) through underground mining.

In Jan-Oct 2023, 144.6 mio t (-4.0 mio t or -2.7% y-o-y) were delivered to end-users, including:

·        94.3 mio t (-4.4 mio t or -4.5%) for export,
·        27.4 mio t (+0.7 mio t or +2.6%) to Russian metallurgical companies
·        14.6 mio t (+0.2 mio t or +1.4%) to local coal-fired power plants.

As of November 01, 2023, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 21.7 mio t (+2.8 mio t or +14.8% vs. November 01, 2022) amid international sanctions against Russia and logistical issues.
