Rail coal shipments to Russian ports in Jan-Jun 2021-2023

Total railway loadings of Russian and Kazakh coal to Russian ports in January-June 2023 amounted to 97.8 mio t. (+3.5 mio t vs H1 2022 and +2.4 mio t vs H1 2021).

Meanwhile, shipments of Russian coal via the northwestern ports remained almost flat if compared to 2021 at 29.7 mio t (+0.2 mio t vs January-June 2021). Overall volume growth is attributed to the increase in transit of Kazakh coal, which surged to 3.8 mio t (+3.1 mio t in January-June 2021) due to the substitution of Russian coal on the European market with supplies from Kazakhstan, not subject to Western sanctions.

Rail shipments of Russian coal to Far East export terminals in H1 2023 increased to 48.1 mio t (+2.3 mio t vs January-June 2022), but failed to reach H1 2021 level of 49 mio t.

The volume of shipments to the Black Sea and Azov seaports climbed up to 0.9 mio t in comparison with 2021, but fell considerably versus the same period of 2022 to 15.7 mio t (-2.6 mio t y-o-y) amid railway constraints on RZD network.
