Total railway loadings of Russian and Kazakh coal to Russian ports in January-June 2023 amounted to 97.8 mio t. (+3.5 mio t vs H1 2022 and +2.4 mio t vs H1 2021).

Meanwhile, shipments of Russian coal via the northwestern ports remained almost flat if compared to 2021 at 29.7 mio t (+0.2 mio t vs January-June 2021). Overall volume growth is attributed to the increase in transit of Kazakh coal, which surged to 3.8 mio t (+3.1 mio t in January-June 2021) due to the substitution of Russian coal on the European market with supplies from Kazakhstan, not subject to Western sanctions.
