New data shows a substantial increase in building, approving, and planning new coal power projects in China during 2022. As of January 2023, China has 1,093 GW of coal power capacity in operation, accounting for 52% of the global total, 115 GW of new capacity under construction, and an additional 250 GW at various pre-construction stages
