Chinese seaborne steam coal imports in October exceeded 34.2m MT of cargo, setting a record for the most quantity discharged in a single month.
This represents increases of 15.8% month-on-month, 33.5% year-over-year, and 4.8% over the previous record set this August.
Looking at individual suppliers, a record of more than 22.5m MT of Indonesian Steam Coal was discharged at Chinese ports in October – 20% more than in September and 39% more year-over-year.
Australian Steam Coal shipments to China exceeded 5.6m MT throughout this period, which is the third-largest amount to date, registering a 63.1% year-over-year increase, yet remaining just short of May and June 2024 deliveries when over 6m MT were discharged each month.
A further 4.1m MT of Steam Coal to China originated from Russia, which is actually a decrease of 1.1% month-on-month and 3.3% year-over-year.
Meanwhile, Steam Coal discharges in November are seeing an 18.9% year-over-year boost, suggesting another strong month for China’s seaborne imports.
