Coal-fired power as a security backstop in Europe’s grid

Global hard coal production increased by around 5.1% to an estimated 7.4 Gt in 2021. In the EU, coal supply grew by a massive 12.4% with lignite production increasing by 12.5%, hard coal production by 1.2% and coal imports by 19.4%.
