North Queensland’s coal export hit 6 month high

(SX Coal) Coal export of three major ports in North Queensland in June increased for the third straight month, marking a new high since December last year, said the North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation. The vast majority of coal exported by North Queensland is coking coal.

According to the data released by the company, the total coal export volume in June stood at 12.24 million tonnes, declining by 15.86% from the same month last year, but up 4.79% from a month ago.

North Queensland mainly transported coal through Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay and Abbot Point.

In June, the Abbot Point, the smallest among the three, handled 2.16 million tonnes of coal, marking declines of 22.52% year on year and 15.69% and month on month.

The capacity of Abbot Point is 50 million tonnes. From January-June, 15.25 million tonnes of coal were shipped through the port with a 13.14% increment than a year ago.

The Dalrymple Bay, with 85 million tonnes of capacity, had 4.85 million tonnes of coal shipped to other countries in June, a decrease of 30.2% year on year and an increase of 10.29% month on month.

The port’s coal export over January-June was 28.08 million tonnes, dropping by 16.53% from the preceding year.

During the same period, the Hay Point, operated by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, exported 5.24 million tonnes of coal last month, a rise of 8.63% and 10.78% from the year and month prior.

Hay Point’s handling capacity is 55 million tonnes. Its total export in the first half of 2020 was 24.88 million tonnes, a slide of 0.61% year on year.
